چکیده

The study of molecular transformation processes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the environment significantly contributes to a better understanding of the global biogeochemical organic matter cycle. In an oxic karst groundwater system, in which the most powerful abiotic DOC degradative reactions, photodegradation and metal-mediated redox chemistry, are at best marginal contributors, a near complete turnover of fulvic acids (FAs) has been observed within decades ( 60 years). Depletion of oxygen for a very extensive range of aliphatic and aromatic carbon chemical environments has been confirmed as well as the formation of novel classes of compounds, suggesting a major contribution from biotic processes. From these results we infer that FAs must be perceived as a rather active participant in the global carbon cycle. Molecular-level alterations of such magnitude and rapidity on such short-time scales ought to be considered as widespread in the processing of ‘‘refractory’’ DOC in the environment. 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Modeling of karst and alluvial springs discharge in the central Alborz highlands and on the Caspian southern coasts

Springs are the important water resources, which thier study is necessary in terms of their management and exploitation. In northern Iran, the karst springs locate in the central Alborz highlands and alluvial springs on the Caspian southern coasts. The Karst and alluvial springs discharge is variable because of different conditions in terms of aquifer, topography and precipitation .This study ha...

Hydrothermal waters from karst aquifer: Case study of the Trozza basin (Central Tunisia)

Tunisia is rich in geothermal resources from ancient civilizations. Hydrothermal activity in Tunisia has been related to three main stages: magmatic and tectonic activities, eustatisme (Atlantic and Mediterranean coupling) and climate change. The principal factor and the responsable of this phenomenon is the meteoric water by piston flow processes. It constitue the catalyst of volcanism. The Tr...

Sorption of humic substances on aquifer material at artificial recharge of groundwater.

Experiments in batch equilibrium system were carried out to evaluate the importance of physical and chemical factors determining the sorption efficiency of humic substances (HS) on aquifer material, which has been used for artificial recharge of groundwater (ARG) in drinking water production. Results showed that an increase of the amount of clay in the aquifer material and a decrease of pH in w...

Factors Affecting Public-Supply Well Vulnerability in Two Karst Aquifers

Karst aquifers occur in a range of climatic and geologic settings. Nonetheless, they are commonly characterized by their vulnerability to water-quality impairment. Two karst aquifers, the Edwards aquifer in south-central Texas and the Upper Floridan aquifer in western Florida, were investigated to assess factors that control the movement of contaminants to public-supply wells (PSWs). The geoche...

Evaluating hydrogeochemistry and turbidity problem of a carbonate aquifer, Shiraz, Iran

Important karstic aquifers exist in west and southwest of Iran. Mansour-Abad Karstic region is located in Shiraz, southwest of Iran. It supplies the drinking water for the whole area by 4 pumping water wells, some of which have water turbidity problem. The present research aims to assess the hydrogeochemistry and turbidity problem in the karstic water production wells. The EC varies between 703...
